The whole country is dotted with ancient ruins and historical sites from the Roman, Byzantine and Islamic eras, many of them well intact; history at its best, particularly those at Carthage, Bella Regia, El-Jem and Dougga. The capital of Tunis is also worth noting.



EPHESUS: One of the greatest and most remarkably intact ancient Roman city of the present day,  ancient ruins of a past civilisation date back to the 1st and 2nd centuries. One of the grandest archaeological remains found in the far Eastern Europe and the Middle East; splendid tall towers, arches, temples, churches, baths, tombs, gates and columns make up the complex; the Temple of Artemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World,  near the site of Ephesus.  THE AEGEAN COAST is an area  renowned for historical and archaeological sites and ruins including the site of Troy – an ancient and remarkable archaeological site dating back thousands of years.



The GREAT ZIMBABWE NATIONAL MONUMENT is an astounding archaeological site, said to be some of the best on the continent. This is the most important and most significant archaeological site, south of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.  The large compound of ruins are some of the largest ancient structures in sub-Saharan Africa.  The Great Enclosure is the main attraction, with walls over 10m high and 4m thick.   Many archaeological finds are housed in the museum on site.






PRE-HISTORIC SITES dot all over the country.  Monuments from many ages are found all over the country including Christian monuments and churches.



The ancient ROCK PAINTINGS and CAVES at the town of Gobustan are said to be thousands of years old and is what considered an extraordinary attraction.



Taj Mahal among other great temples & palaces. Ancient monuments are found all over the country.



Bagan (or Pagan), thousands of pagodas.



Angor Wat temples, a World Heritage Site and many people would argue that it’s the world’s great temple complex.



Borobudur, largest Buddhist shrine in southern hemisphere.

Eastern Georgia is steeped with ancient sites, churches and religious monuments. In Western Georgia is the ancient town of Kutaisi.



Near to Ho Chi Minh City are the Cu Chi Tunnels, a remarkable tunnel system used in the Vietnam War by the Viet Cong.  The tunnels can be viewed by the public and provides a captivating day trip from the city.

San Ignacio Jesuit ruins



One of the best preserved and largest Jesuit Mission ruins to be found in South America. The ruins are a collection of churches, paintings and sculptures; found at Trinidad, Jesus and San Ignacio Guazu.



Machu Picchu and the Inca Ruins; Nazca Lines. MACHU PICHU is one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites and definitely the most famous archaeological site in South America. The site is known as the ‘Lost City of the Incas’; it is a complete city which was buried in forest jungle for centuries. Only recently excavated in the early 1900’s. The ruins are a maze of temples, palaces, staircases, terraces and towers set high in the mountains to create a scene that is outstanding and unforgettable. CUZCO is the adventure and archaeological capital of Peru, if not South America; Inca archaeological sites are abundant around Cuzco. The country is saturated with archaeological sites and monuments.
